Comprehensive screening may be appropriate depending on your circumstances.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
The infection is most commonly spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral sex. If left untreated, syphilis can progress through several stages and potentially affect various parts of the body, including the nervous system, eyes, heart and blood vessels. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications.
Syphilis symptoms vary depending on the stage of infection.
Common symptoms include:
The sore often heals on its own, even without treatment.
Possible symptoms include:
Some people have no symptoms at all despite being infected.
If left untreated for many years, syphilis may affect the brain, nerves, eyes, heart and other organs.
Yes.
Many people with syphilis experience no symptoms, particularly during the latent stage of infection.
Because symptoms may be absent or easily overlooked, testing remains the most reliable way to determine whether an infection is present.
Syphilis is usually diagnosed through blood tests that detect antibodies produced in response to infection.
In some situations, if a syphilis sore is present, additional testing may be performed on a sample taken from the lesion.
The most appropriate test depends on your symptoms, exposure history and stage of infection.
Most syphilis screening involves a blood test.
Common laboratory tests include:
Your doctor may recommend one or more tests depending on your clinical situation.
Syphilis has a window period, meaning there is a period after exposure during which testing may not yet detect infection.
In general, syphilis testing becomes increasingly reliable approximately 3 to 6 weeks after exposure, although timing varies depending on the test used and individual factors.
Testing during the window period may result in a negative result despite infection being present.
If testing is performed very soon after exposure, your doctor may recommend repeat testing at a later date to improve accuracy.
Testing may be appropriate after a single sexual encounter if there is concern regarding possible exposure.
The decision depends on factors such as:
A consultation can help determine whether testing is recommended and when it should be performed.
Yes.
Syphilis can be transmitted through oral sex if there is contact with an infectious sore or lesion.
The infection may affect the mouth, throat, genitals or anal region depending on the site of exposure.
Yes.
An individual may be unaware they have syphilis because symptoms can be mild, temporary or absent.
This is one reason routine STI screening may be recommended for individuals with ongoing risk factors.
Yes.
Consultations, investigations and test results are handled confidentially in accordance with Singapore healthcare privacy requirements.
Patients often choose private clinics because they value discretion when seeking testing for sensitive health concerns.
The turnaround time depends on the type of test performed.
Some rapid screening tests may provide preliminary results within a short period, while laboratory-based testing may take several days.
Your doctor will advise on the expected turnaround time for your specific test.
Yes.
Syphilis testing is commonly included as part of comprehensive STI screening panels.
Depending on your circumstances, screening may also include:
Your doctor can recommend the most suitable screening package based on your risk profile.
In many situations, additional STI screening may be recommended.

Yes.
Syphilis is generally treatable with appropriate antibiotics.
Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the infection from progressing and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
Untreated syphilis may progress through multiple stages.
Over time, serious complications may develop involving:
Early detection and treatment can help prevent these complications.
Yes.
Successfully treated syphilis does not provide lifelong immunity.
It is possible to become infected again if exposed to the bacteria through future sexual contact.
Practising safer sex and undergoing appropriate screening can help reduce the risk of reinfection.
Follow-up testing may be recommended to ensure treatment has been effective and to monitor your response.
The appropriate follow-up schedule depends on:
Your doctor will advise on any recommended follow-up.
