WHAT IS AN STD / STI TEST?
An STD / STI test is a medical test to determine the presence of a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) or a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). A sexually transmitted infection is an infection spread mainly by sexual contact with an infected person.
Different tests are used to detect different STIs. There is no single procedure or test that can detect all sexually transmitted infections. Different STI tests may require different types of samples from different parts of the body, for example, blood (serum) samples from the vein or the fingertip, swab samples can be oral, urethral, vaginal or anal, or even skin scrapings or skin biopsies from the affected skin area.
An STD / STI test generally refers to any of a number of tests that can be used to detect a sexually transmitted infection. STDs and STIs that are commonly tested for in Singapore include gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, hepatitis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.
