Trichomoniasis

What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection of the genital tract by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. Women are the main carries of the disease. Infected men are usually asymptomatic or may present with non gonococcal urethritis.

Incubation Period of Trichomoniasis

Incubation period can be 1 day to 1 week.

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis

  • Asymptomatic
  • Purulent foul smelling yellow-green vaginal discharge
  • Itch around the vulva
  • Associated with premature rupture of membranes or preterm delivery in pregnant women

Testing for Trichomoniasis

  • Vaginal swab tests for T. vaginalis

Treatment for Trichomoniasis

Antibiotic regimens are available for treatment of trichomoniasis either as a single dose or as a 7 day regimen

Follow Up of Trichomoniasis

Follow-up is unnecessary unless symptoms do not resolve
