What is Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis?

Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis is an infestation of the anogenital region by the crab louse, Phthirus pubis. It is spread by close contact and usually sexually transmitted.

Incubation Period of Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis

Up to 1 week after contact with an infested partner.

Symptoms of Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis

  • Presence of brown adult lice on the pubic hair, body hair, eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Presence of eggs (nits) on the hairs
  • Small bloody red (haemorrhagic) spots on the pubic/genital skin and underwear
  • Itch
  • Asymptomatic

Testing for Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis

Clinical diagnosis confirmed by the presence of lice or eggs (nits)

Treatment for Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis

Lotion application over the affected areas. Wash off after 12 hours.

Follow Up of Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis

Follow-up after 1 week. For re-treatment if any lice or eggs (nits) are found.
Contaminated clothing and bed sheets should be washed in hot water.

Prevention of Crabs/Pubic Lice/Pediculosis Pubis

Regular sex partners within the last month should be examined and treated.
