What is Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)?

Non gonococcal urethritis is a sexually transmitted infection of the urinary tract that is not caused by N.gonorrhoeae. It may be caused by other organisms such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida sp, bacterial urinary tract infections and Herpes Simplex virus.

Incubation Period for Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)

Incubation period may be 1 day to 1 week.

Symptoms of Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)

  • Dysuria, or painful or burning urination/micturition
  • Itch in and along the urethra
  • Muco-purulent or yellow discharge from the urethra

Testing for Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)

  • Gram-stain urethral smear
  • Urine test (First Pass Urine)

Treatment for Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)

Several antibiotic regimens are available to treat non gonococcal urethritis, ranging from single stat dose to 7 days regimen.

Follow Up of Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)

Follow-up is required 2 weeks after treatment for evaluation of symptoms and repeat test for test-of-cure.

Prevention of Non gonococcal urethritis (NGU)

Sex partners within the last 60 days should be screened and treated.
