What is Candidiasis / Thrush?

Candidiasis or Thrush is a fungal infection caused mainly by the yeast Candida albicans. Genital candidiasis is a fungal infection that occurs around the genital area, e.g. vulva, vagina, prepuce and glans penis.

It is a common infection in women and generally not considered a sexually transmitted disease. Men can also be affected.

Symptoms of Candidiasis / Thrush

  • Thick, curdy vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal Itch or pruritus
  • Vaginal Soreness
  • Vaginal Burning
  • Pain during sex or dyspareunia
  • Pain while passing urine or during micturition
  • Rash or white patches on male penis

Testing for Candidiasis / Thrush

  • Clinical signs
  • Laboratory testing or swab culture of vaginal discharge

Treatment for Candidiasis / Thrush

Candidiasis can be treated with oral antibiotics or vaginal pessaries. Treatment regimes typically range from one to three days or up to seven days if required.

Prevention of Candidiasis / Thrush

Avoid using local irritants ( e.g. perfumed products ) on the genital areas and avoid tight fitting clothing
