Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sexual health clinic?

A sexual health clinic is a medical clinic that provides assessment, testing, diagnosis, treatment and advice relating to sexual health conditions. These may include sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV testing, STD screening, sexual health concerns and preventive healthcare.

Sexual health clinics also provide education and guidance to help individuals understand their personal risks and make informed healthcare decisions. Sexual health services may be suitable for individuals with symptoms, known exposure, or those seeking routine screening.

What is the difference between an STI and an STD?

The terms STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) and STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) are often used interchangeably.

An STI refers to the presence of an infection that may or may not cause symptoms. An STD generally refers to an infection that has progressed to the point of causing signs or symptoms.

Many infections remain asymptomatic for long periods, which is why healthcare professionals increasingly use the term STI.

When should I visit a sexual health clinic?

You may consider visiting a sexual health clinic if you:

Have had unprotected sex
Have a new sexual partner
Have multiple sexual partners
Experience genital symptoms
Notice unusual discharge
Develop genital sores, ulcers or rashes
Experience painful urination
Have concerns regarding HIV exposure
Have been informed that a partner has an STI
Wish to undergo routine screening

Many people seek testing despite having no symptoms, particularly after a new sexual relationship or potential exposure.

Can I have an STI without any symptoms?

Yes.

Many sexually transmitted infections may not cause noticeable symptoms, especially during the early stages.

Individuals can carry and transmit infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis without being aware of it. This is one reason why routine screening may be recommended for sexually active individuals with relevant risk factors.

What are the common symptoms of sexually transmitted infections?

Possible symptoms include:

However, many infections do not cause symptoms at all. Testing remains the most reliable way to determine whether an infection is present.

What sexually transmitted infections can be tested for?

Depending on your symptoms and risk profile, testing may be available for:

The most appropriate tests depend on your individual circumstances and should be discussed during your consultation.

How often should I undergo sexual health screening?

There is no single recommendation that applies to everyone.

The appropriate frequency depends on factors such as:

Number of sexual partners
Whether condoms are used consistently
Previous STI history
Type of sexual activity
Whether you have a new sexual partner

Your doctor can advise on a screening schedule that is appropriate for your circumstances.

Do I need a sexual health screening if I feel healthy?

Possibly.

Many sexually transmitted infections can remain silent for months or even years.

Individuals who are sexually active may choose to undergo screening for reassurance, particularly if they have a new partner, multiple partners or concerns about previous exposure. Early detection may allow treatment to begin before complications develop.

What happens during a sexual health consultation?

A consultation usually begins with a discussion about:

Your symptoms
Medical history
Sexual history relevant to your healthcare
Previous STI diagnoses
Recent exposures

Based on your circumstances, the doctor may recommend further testing, treatment or follow-up care.

The consultation is conducted professionally and confidentially.

What tests are commonly performed during sexual health screening?

Depending on your symptoms and risk factors, testing may involve:

Blood Tests

Used for conditions such as:

HIV
Syphilis
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis C

Urine Tests

Often used to detect infections such as:

Chlamydia
Gonorrhoea

Swab Tests

May be performed when clinically indicated for specific symptoms or sites of exposure.

Are sexual health tests painful?

Most sexual health tests are generally well tolerated.

Blood tests involve a routine blood sample. Urine testing is non-invasive. Swab testing may cause temporary mild discomfort but is generally brief.

Your doctor will explain any procedures before they are performed.

How long does it take to get STI test results?

The turnaround time depends on the specific test performed.

Some rapid tests may provide results on the same day, while laboratory-based tests may require several working days.

Your doctor will advise you regarding expected timelines when the tests are ordered.

Are sexual health consultations confidential?

Yes.

Medical consultations and test results are handled confidentially in accordance with healthcare privacy requirements in Singapore.

Many patients choose private sexual health clinics because they value discretion and privacy when discussing sensitive health matters.

Will my employer, family members or partner be informed of my test results?

Medical information is confidential.

Healthcare providers do not disclose your medical information without your consent except where required by law.

If you have concerns regarding confidentiality, you may discuss them with your doctor during the consultation.

Should I get tested after a one-time sexual encounter?

It may be appropriate depending on the nature of the exposure and the timing involved.

Different infections have different testing windows. Some tests may be reliable shortly after exposure, while others may require a longer interval before accurate results can be obtained.

A doctor can advise on the most suitable testing schedule based on your situation.

What is a testing window period?

A window period refers to the time between potential exposure and when a test can reliably detect an infection.

Testing too early may produce results that are not yet conclusive for certain infections.

If testing is performed during a window period, repeat testing may sometimes be recommended.

Can oral sex transmit sexually transmitted infections?

Yes.

Certain sexually transmitted infections may be transmitted through oral sexual contact, including:

Gonorrhoea
Chlamydia
Syphilis
Herpes
HIV (lower risk compared to some other forms of exposure)

Risk levels vary depending on the infection and individual circumstances.

Can sexually transmitted infections be cured?

Some sexually transmitted infections can be effectively treated and cured.

Others can be managed but may remain lifelong conditions.

The outcome often depends on:

The specific infection
How early it is diagnosed
Whether treatment is started promptly

Seeking medical attention early generally improves outcomes.

Why is early detection important?

Early detection may:

Allow treatment to begin sooner
Reduce the risk of complications
Reduce the risk of transmission to others
Provide reassurance where testing is negative

Many infections are easier to manage when diagnosed at an earlier stage.

Can I undergo a comprehensive STI screening package?

Yes.

Many individuals prefer comprehensive screening rather than testing for a single infection.

Depending on your circumstances, a screening panel may include testing for:

Your doctor can recommend an appropriate screening panel based on your individual needs.
