WHAT IS AN STD / STI TEST?

An STD / STI test is a medical test to determine the presence of a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) or a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). A sexually transmitted infection is an infection spread mainly by sexual contact with an infected person.

Different tests are used to detect different STIs. There is no single procedure or test that can detect all sexually transmitted infections. Different STI tests may require different types of samples from different parts of the body, for example, blood (serum) samples from the vein or the fingertip, swab samples can be oral, urethral, vaginal or anal, or even skin scrapings or skin biopsies from the affected skin area.

An STD / STI test generally refers to any of a number of tests that can be used to detect a sexually transmitted infection. STDs and STIs that are commonly tested for in Singapore include gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, hepatitis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.

WHY SHOULD YOU GET TESTED?

It is important to get yourself tested for STIs if you think you have been exposed to infection. Early detection of STIs allows you to obtain appropriate and definitive treatment earlier and to minimize transmission to other partners. Although there is no cure for HIV infection, the condition can be managed effectively. Other STIs, such as gonorrhoea and syphilis, can be treated and cured through medication.

Another reason to get yourself tested is because symptoms of an STI may not appear right away. A person with an STI may not know he or she has the disease. There is also a great risk of an infected person who does not know he or she is infected to pass the disease to other people unknowingly. Getting yourself tested is the only way to find out whether you have been infected by HIV or other STIs.

This includes a detailed consultation on sexual exposure risk, physical examination of external genitalia, urethral discharges, unusual sores and ulcers, lumps and bumps and an in-depth discussion on required investigations and management.

The screening packages are designed based on level of sexual risk and severity of symptoms.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STD TESTING / SCREENING:

  • For urinary tests, please hold your urine for at least 1 hour prior to coming to clinic.
  • For females, there will be no testing during menstruation. Please come before your menses start or after your menses have stopped.
  • For males, if you have any penile discharge, please try not to wipe away so that we can collect a swab sample.
  • For global health screening packages, please remember to fast for at least 8 hours from the prior night.
  • Most test results should take 3 to 5 working days. Certain send out tests could take up to 2 weeks.
